Microbiology Panels and Profiles

About this Testing

Microbiology/Fungal Panel/Profile PCR Pathogen

A microbiology/fungal panel or profile is a diagnostic test that uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique to detect the presence of specific fungal pathogens in a sample. The test is typically used to identify the cause of a fungal infection, such as a skin or nail infection, or an invasive infection that affects the lungs, blood, or other parts of the body.

The fungal panel can help identify the specific fungal pathogen causing the infection, allowing for targeted and appropriate treatment with antifungal medications. This can help reduce the risk of complications, such as systemic infection and sepsis, and improve treatment outcomes.

In addition to PCR-based fungal panels, there are also microbiology PCR panels that can be used to detect the presence of bacterial pathogens in various sample types, including blood, urine, and respiratory secretions. These tests may include a range of bacterial pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, among others.
